The threat of terrorism and the consciousness of
the co-responsibility of Poland for the fate of the whole
democratic world, as well as the defensive doctrine of the
Republic of Poland became a basis for creating special units
within the structures of the Military Police. Their formation
was a landmark of not only the
third five-year period, but also the whole period of the
existence of the Military Police of the III. Republic of Poland.
The call-up of units capable of immediate
transfer to the area of operation is a response to the threat of
the world terrorism and the necessity to counter it by the
international community. The Special Units are the future of the
Military Police.
This is already a historical although a new quality. These
Special Units are elite units specifically for special
operations of a police nature.
As they are mobile police-military units, they
also constitute support for the Armed Forces of
the Republic of Poland, taking part in peaceful and stabilising
missions. The obligations of the military police
within the country
cover
counter-terrorist
operations, protection of
VIPs and countering
any
breaches
of public order in the event
that the available
police forces are insufficient. However, their main tasks
include missions abroad.
In 2004, the first special unit (Military Police
Special Unit)
inaugurated its activity in Warsaw. The next ones were formed at
the beginning of 2005 in Minsk Mazowiecki and Gliwice. On the
basis of the Gliwice unit, a multi-national battalion for the
needs of NATO will have been created
with
international co-operation. Also the Czech
Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Croatia
are
participating
in this initiative, in which Poland plays
the
role
of leading
state.
On the other hand, the
special unit in Minsk Mazowiecki will provide for military
policemen who will constitute a part of a multi-national
battalion of the military police formed for the needs of the
North-East Corps. They will also participate in commanding the
battalion. As well as Poles,
Germans and Danish are
also involved in this project.
There are many signs that one of the special units may become an
integral part of the Military Police Forces formed as a result
of an initiative of France. There are plans to form yet another
unit of this type, but
its locality has not
been specified yet.
